Our History

The Midwest organization started in the early 1940’s when a group of farmers and ranchers from Keith and Perkins Counties banded together on March 20, 1945, and formed an association which eventually became the Midwest Electric Cooperative Corporation. In June of 1947, Dale Erlewine, President of the Board of Directors, turned on the first electricity, serving 223 farms. Since the arrival of the first railcar of poles, the need for rural electricity quickly increased. 

Today, the cooperative serves over 6,800 meters each month. Midwest Electric’s services range from residential meters, stock wells, irrigation wells, to commercial services. Electricity is playing a bigger part in the everyday lives of consumers than anyone could have imagined in 1945.
